Hot action for under-23 finals

Despite the high temperatures athletes produced fast times, many of which were very close to under-23 World Best Times. The closest came in the men's single sculls with Germany's Hubert Trzybinski being pushed by Hannes Obreno (BEL) and Francesco Cardaioli (ITA) to record a time less than three seconds outside of the World Best Time.
 
Germany also won the women's single sculls with Lisa Schmidla showing dominating form. Canada's Carling Zeeman was second and Latvia's Elza Gulbe was third. For both Zeeman and Gulbe they were the sole medal-earners for their country in a day that saw a wide spread of medals amongst nations.
 
In the blue riband men's eight New Zealand dethroned the reigning World Champions, the United States to win the gold. The US boat finished second with Poland taking third. The United States, however, proved their dominance in the women's eight, easily defending their World Champion status by winning against Great Britain and Germany.
 
The United States also had gold medal success in the lightweight men's single sculls when Andrew Campbell took on the best in the world and came out on top to be the first American to win this event. Franciscus Goutier of the Netherlands was second and Paul O'Donovan of Ireland took third.
 
Germany comes away from the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships at the top of the medal table with 11 medals in total. Italy follows with six medals while Romania and the United States both earned five. The medal spread covered 24 nations and included bronze for Japan's Ayami Oishi in the lightweight women's single sculls. This event was won in commanding style by Aikaterini Nikolaidou of Greece with defending World Champion, Alena Kryvasheyenka of Belarus taking the sliver.
 
International rowing now moves to Trakai, Lithuania for the World Rowing Junior Championships starting 7 August 2013. Many of the athletes competing in Linz will now shift their attention to competing at the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju, Korea, which begins on the 25 August 2013.
