Estonia readies for World Rowing Coaches Conference

This is the first time the coaches conference has been staged in Estonia and the collection of coaching specialty topics that are to be presented include a large showing of Estonian talent.

SA Competitive Rowing Commission, John Boultbee says there is a variety of speakers that will present over the three days.

"The conference will offer coaches some insight into the fantastic results achieved by Norway this year with coach Johan Flodin as the Coach in the Spotlight," says Boultbee. "Also, by popular request we have last year's psychologist Annelen Collatz (Germany) presenting on both the psychology of coaches and of athletes.” Britain's gold medal winning triathlon coach Malcolm Brown will shed light on training for different disciplines at one time.  

"There are innovative presentations from Estonian experts on nutrition and muscle growth and also a panel discussion on competing on other continents – in anticipation of Rio  2016. It is one of the best line-ups at a FISA Conference for some years. Participants will also have the opportunity to hear from the top coaches in the world about some of the issues facing the sport at the moment."

The conference is to be held in the hotel Radisson Blu Olympia in Tallinn. The hotel was built for the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980 as the Olympic sailing regatta was held in Tallinn.

A gala dinner will be held on Friday night, 8 November in Seaplane Harbour. This was built in 1917 as part of Peter the Great's sea fortress. At the dinnner the 2013 World Rowing Award winners will be announced. This includes the Male and Female Crew of the Year, Para Crew of the Year, Coach of the Year and Distinguished Service to Rowing award.

Rowing in Estonia is based in Parnu, about 120km south of Tallinn. Tallinn itself has one club situated on Harku Lake. Estonia is currently developing a new rowing course in Aidu. It is a former mining area until June 2012 and a month later excavation began for the rowing course. It should be ready by 2014.
