Youth in Focus – October 2013

Laura Oprea was spotted as a 12-year-old at her school by two rowing coaches – Georgeta and Marian Grijuc – because she was the tallest in the class. They asked Oprea if she would like to try rowing. ” I did not know much about rowing but I love sport in general,” says Oprea. “I decided to go ahead and the results began to appear.” Oprea, now 19 years old, has medalled at three junior championships and this year she became an Under-23 World Champion in the women’s double sculls. Oprea is our Youth in Focus shining light this month.
I love to row because ..  Rowing is a clean sport. If you are the best nobody can stop you from winning.

If I was to row across the Atlantic Ocean I would like to do it with …I don’t think this will happen but if I have the chance I’d want to be with Elisabeta Lipa.

Before I race I always … kiss the cross on my necklace, I think this is my good luck.

Bow seat or stroke seat?  I like stroke seat more, but it is not a problem to row in bow seat.

16km or 10 x 250m? 10 X 250m

My favourite race … the final of the World Rowing Under 23 women’s double sculls in Linz. was my best race.

If I won $1 million I would… set up a rowing club.

If I could change one thing about the world it would be … I don’t want to change anything. The perfect world does not exist.

Elisabeta Lipa … is my biggest inspiration.

In the future I want to … continue with rowing and I wish to win an Olympic medal.
