Despite a strong crosswind testing the crews’ early session technique, Mercer Lake saw some brilliant performances as some of the biggest names in rowing today battled it out against others returning to form or making their mark for the first time.

Highlights of the event included the men’s double sculls. Five crews were within a second of each other at the first 500m mark but Bjorn Hendrickx and Xtijn Smulders crossed the line first, 0.30 seconds ahead of the Swiss.
Olaf Tufte emerged as a new single sculler to watch after beating off the challenge of Olympic silver medallist Xeno Mueller and the new British pairing of Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell. The up and coming US double of Catherine Humblet and Mary Obidinski also delighted the crowd with a clear water win in the lightweight women’s double sculls
