About Brest
Brest is situated in the southwest of Belarus at the confluence of the Bug and Mukhavyets rivers, 350km from the capital Minsk. It has a population of 300,000 inhabitants. The city was founded by the Slavs. During World War I the city was captured by the German army in 1915. In 1918 the city was declared part of the Belarusian Democratic Republic. However, in 1919 the newly reconstituted Poland too control of Brest. From 1941-1944, during World War II, Germany occupied Brest. From 1944 to 1991 the city was part of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) and is now in Belarus.
