About the Netherlands and Amsterdam
The Netherlands, also known as Holland, gained its independence from Spain in the 17th century where it became the leading commercial nation and maritime power in the world. Increasing prosperity in the 17th century created a cultural and intellectual boom, the fruits of which are still enjoyed today. Every year, tourists from around the world visit the Dutch museums to admire paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals and many other old Dutch masters. Amsterdam was founded in the Middle Ages near a dam on the River Amstel. The City truly blossomed in the early 17th century, where it became the world’s largest centre for trade and art. The historic heart of the city known as the ‘Grachtengordel’ (canal ring) has remained beautifully intact to this day. Holland has a population of 16,847,007 (July 2011 est.) of which 752,162 inhabitants live in Amsterdam.
