Trakai is a historic city which lies 28km west of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. There are approximately 5.4 thousand inhabitants (2008 est.). Trakai District is one of the most beautiful and historically interesting regions in Lithuania. The town of Trakai was first mentioned in German history in 1337, which is regarded to be the official date of its foundation. There are over 200 lakes in the region of which Galve is the deepest and has 21 islands.
