About Singapore

Singapore is located on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Occupied by the Japanese in World War II, Singapore declared independence, uniting with other former British territories to form Malaysia in 1963. Two years later it separated from Malaysia. Singapore is the world’s fourth leading financial center and its port is one of the busiest in the world. Singapore is a mix of races and cultures, a city of contrasts, of East and West, of past, present and future. The population of Singapore is 4,740,737 (July 2011 est.).
