The waters of the Rotsee are ideal for competitive rowing. The lake's size and shape enable Olympic-style six lane racing over 2000metres; its geographical position makes the course arguably the fairest in the world. At the same time, the Rotsee is also a nature reserve with a rich variety of flora and fauna. Its shores are a year-round recreational area for large numbers of local residents and tourists. The first Swiss National Championships were held on the Rotsee in 193. It then hosted the European Championships in 1934. FISA inaugural World Championships were held in 1962. Since 1997 Lucerne has hosted the World Cup annually with the exception of 2001 where it hosted the World Championships.
