Women's Single Sculls (W1x) - Final

Twigg is not usually the fastest at the start, but today she had the lead with 500m rowed. World Champion, Kim Crow, was also right up at the front and these two top scullers moved clean away from the rest of the field. 

Twigg has been plugging away in the single regularly since 2007, but is yet to win a World Championship title. She finished second at the World Rowing Championships last year and it looks as if this may be her year to break through.

With 500m left to row, Twigg was still in the lead and looking like she could easily hold off Crow. Crow, who had good overlap on Twigg for the majority of the race could not match the New Zealander. Twigg won and continues a season of straight wins. Crow held on to second, with Austria’s Magdalena Lobnig back in third.

Gold – TWIGG, Emma (NZL)

A bit of a relaxing day today actually, it is nice to come out with a third win. There is a strong group of girls and it is nice to have such a strong field, but it’s a challenge as well. I raced my race today, I knew I needed a strong last 500 and I did that. The wind was very changeable from the start to the finish and I had to account for that.

Silver – CROW, Crow (AUS1)

It is a good rivalry with Emma [Twigg]. We are pretty evenly matched. She has got the better of me the last couple of times. But it was a good race today. I do have a lot to improve on, but we have got time.

Bronze – LOBNIG, Magdalena (AUT)

This is my best race so far, better than the heat and semifinal. At 1000m I had enough reserves to keep going and I kept an economical stroke. I am very happy because it is my second medal in Lucerne. It is going very tough to beat two very strong competitors, but I am very happy today.

B-Final

A very tight semifinal for Sanita Puspure of Ireland yesterday saw her just miss out on the A-final. Puspure came back fresh today and her stamina got her to the finish line first. But leading at the start was Olympic medallist in the single Fie Udby Erichsen of Denmark. Erichsen took a year off after the London Olympics to have a baby and she’s now back and regaining her previous form. Erichsen, however, didn’t quite have the same stamina as Puspure with Julia Levina of Russia also getting ahead.
