But by the first 500m mark, Italy had the lead with Romania now in second. The Italian crew of Di Costanzo, Gabbia, Abagnale and Cuomo continued to lead, but the gap they had gained was being eaten away at as the remaining five boats were in a practical line and no one was dropping off the pace. Then Germany began to move and pushed into third, pushing last year’s bronze medallists, the United States into fourth.

All six boats were within striking distance of each other in the final sprint. Italy rated in the low 40s to cling on to the lead. They had done it with an extremely happy Germany taking silver and Romania just holding on to bronze.

It was a difficult race but we are very happy with this result. We have only been rowing with this crew for two months.

B-Final

A small 0.28 saw Croatia miss out on making the A-final during Friday’s semifinals. Would they be able to lead today? At the start Serbia grabbed the lead and by the middle of the race retained the edge over a tightly packed field of Belarus, China, Croatia and France. It all changed in the third 500. Belarus did a big push and overtook Serbia. Croatia began to charge. Croatia had left their best for the end and crossed the line in first.
