Women’s Quadruple Sculls (BW4x) – Final
Coming through the middle of the race Poland still had a small lead, but now Russia were looking to take over with every stroke. Russia had done very well by winning their heat three days ago and they must have been expecting big things today. But Poland was not giving up and they responded, raised their rate and remained just in the lead. Russia reacted back. This was an incredible race for gold.
Rating 37 Russia gave it their best. Volgina, Kurochkina, Oriabinskaia and Stepanova had done it for Russia. Poland held on to second and New Zealand held off a very strong closing sprint by Germany to earn the bronze.
Results: RUS, POL, NZL, GER, GBR, ROU
Gold- VOLGINA, Iuliia (3 seat) (RUS)
We are very happy. The race was very intense to the last moment. It has been in our dreams to stand on the podium, so this is our dream come true.
Silver- BORKOWSKA, Ariana (bow) (POL)
When we started first we were happy. Unfortunately, the Russians beat us. This is our last Under 23 together, three of us were in the same position last year and we are very happy with silver.
Bronze- ROWE, Ashlee (bow) (NZL)
We gave it everything. Start and finish went as planned, no surprises. We are tired but very pleased.
B-Final
From Thursday’s repechage the United States looked to be the crew to beat today. But it was not the case. Australia leapt out at the start with the US coming out the slowest. But by the middle of the race Italy took in the lead and from that point onwards they held it. Australia made a gallant effort to catch the Italians, but Italy remained in control.
