Men’s Pair (BM2-) – Final

But Jack Hargreaves and Nicholas Wheatley of Australia did not give up. Hargreaves and Wheatley had finished a very close third in yesterday’s semifinal and they were having the race of their career. Feeling the crowd’s energy Lodo and Vicino took their stroke rate to 41 and charged for the line. The Australian’s looked exhausted but held on to second with Serbia, Turkey and Greece fighting for third. Greece then completely ran out of steam with Viktor Pivac and Martin Mackovic of Serbia holding it together for bronze.

Gold – VICINO, Giuseppe (stroke seat)
We knew we were strong enough. We really wanted to win.

Silver – HARGREAVES, Jack (bow seat) (AUS)
We didn’t have a great semi, so we drew the outside line. We knew we had to do a lot of work in the middle to challenge the Italians who have a strong sprint. We come from the same state. This is our club pair we rowed all year. So it is good to reach the goal.

Bronze – MACKOVIC, Martin (stroke seat) (SRB)
The last 500m were extremely hard. It is our first year and we are quite happy and satisfied. But we knew we were capable of doing it.

B-Final

The United States’ Cole Reiser and Jordan Vanderstoep just missed out on making the A-final during their semifinal. Today they took off with the pack and by the half way point had moved into third behind Germany and Finland. The Germans (Malte Daberkow and Finn Knueppel) were out in front and moving away from the field. In the final sprint Daberkow and Knueppel remained in front with the Americans sprinting through to second.
