Plocek still had the lead with Wegrzycki-Szymczyk sitting now in third. It was the sprint to the line and it looked like Plocek’s tactic was working. Then Wegrzycki-Szymczyk began to charge. Taking his stroke rate to 36, Wegrzycki-Szymczyk was giving it his all. But he had left it too late. Wegrzycki-Szymczyk overtook a fading Steinhardt, but he couldn’t catch Plocek. Plocek won gold. Wegrzycki-Szymczyk took silver and Zygimantas Galisanskas of Lithuania took advantage of the fading German to grab bronze.

Gold – PLOEK Michal (CZE)
There were some very good scullers in this race. I have a friendly rivalery with Natan since the junior championships. My mom recently passed away and so today I rowed for her.

Silver – WEGRZYCKI-SZYMCZYK Natan (POL)
My goal was to win, and I fought for it. The atmosphere here is great and the people were very nice.

Bronze – GALISANSKIS Zygimantas (LTU)
At the beginning I looked straight. It was very hard at the end. It was the hardest thing of my life.

B-Final

After yesterday’s semifinal Belarus had claim to doing well today. But it was Pavel Sorin of Russia who had the lead for the first half of the race with Pilip Pavukou of Belarus pushing hard. Margins remained tight with only half a second separating the top four boats with 500m left to row. Then a massive push from Pavukou propelled him into the lead and he maintained a 35 stroke rate to the line to win and finish seventh overall. This is a big step up for Pavukou who was in the C-final of the double sculls last year.
