What is The Boat Race?

The first Boat Race was contested in 1829 between Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The second race happened 7 years later in 1836 in London. It is now an annual contest that marks some of the greatest rowing history.

The 2015 BNY Mellon Boat race on 11 April will be the 161st edition of the race. Cambridge currently leads with 81 victories to Oxford’s 79, with one dead-heat in 1877.

The 2015 event will make history as it marks the first time the Women’s Boat Race will take place on the same day on the same course.
