Chungju to host rowing for 2015 Universiade
This is the sixth time that rowing has been part of the Universiade which is a multi-sport event for university students from throughout the world. It will be held from 3 – 14 July 2015 with the rowing regatta taking place from 5 – 7 July.
The new rowing venue of Lake Tangeum is an international standard regatta course. It hosted the very successful 2013 World Rowing Championships which attracted 938 competitors from 69 countries and served as a huge boost to rowing in Korea. Lake Tangeum is located 285km from the main Universiade site of Gwangju. Rowing teams will be accommodated in nearby Chungju Village, 6km from the course.
The Lake Tangeum regatta course an artificial lake, sitting between Chungju Dam and Jojung Dam, is an ideal rowing venue as the water flow can be completely controlled.
The Summer Universiade is held every two years in different parts of the world. It has ten compulsory sports and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country. The event regularly attracts over 9,000 student-athletes and officials. It is open to all student athletes between the ages of 17-28 that have not been out of university, or its equivalent, for more than one year.
A partnership between FISU and World Rowing has seen the frequency of World University Championships and inclusion in the Universiade increase since 2009 with rowing on the official list of Universiade events in 2009 Belgrade (SRB), 2013 Kazan (RUS), and 2015 Gwangju (KOR).
