FISA update on Rio regatta venue water quality
The Lagoa is a well-known venue for the sport of rowing and it has hosted many important national and international regattas including the 2007 Pan Am Games regatta, the 2013 South American Championships and two Olympic qualification regattas (1996 and 2007). It is also home to ten rowing clubs with members who row every day on it and FISA is delighted that the Olympic and Paralympic regattas will be taking place in such an iconic venue in the heart of the city.
FISA has been working closely with the local organisers to ensure that rowing is shown at its best during the Games and the upcoming Olympic test event, the World Rowing Junior Championships in August. Subjects such as water quality have been rigorously investigated. FISA knows that the Brazilian authorities have been taking, and will continue to take, significant steps to improve the situation in the Lagoa ahead of the Olympic Games.
FISA has also looked at the data from the regular tests carried out by the local authorities on the Lagoa and have consulted with experts. Following these reviews, FISA is confident that there is no reason why the regattas this year and during the Games cannot be carried out safely and successfully.
FISA continues to monitor the situation and work with the Rio 2016 organising committee to deliver a great rowing regatta at the Games in 2016.
