Germany had a rocket start in the A-Final of the men’s double sculls. Stephan Riemekasten and Tim Ole Naske have a number of under-23 and junior medals between them from previous years, and Naske has not lost a single race in his international career so far. By the half-way mark the Germans had more than a four-second lead over the Netherlands.

As the race unfolded, the top two positions remained unchanged, with the bronze medal position battled out between Spain and Norway.

In a gigantic sprint to the line, Norway overtook the Netherlands in the final 250m to take silver while Spain finished in fourth less than two tenths of one second behind the Dutch.

Results: GER, NOR, NED, ESP, HUN, LTU

Tim Ole Naske – GER – gold
“This gold means much more than last year in the junior single for me. Because the race was so hard, I think I’ve never been in such a state after a race. The last months training with Stephan were just so great, one of the best times of my life.”

Martin Helseth – NOR – silver
“The last part of the race was very good for us, we just started to pull harder. It’s amazing to win a medal.”

Abe Wiersma – NED – bronze
“It has been some time since the Netherlands has won a medal in the double, so it makes it pretty special. My legs were broken at 1500m, we were just powerless at the end.”

B-Final

France were the definite leaders in this field, with Italy and Switzerland swapping between second and third. France crossed the line first, to take seventh overall, unchallenged by the rest of the field.  Italy overtook Switzerland in the final quarter to finish eighth overall.
