U23 Men's Quadruple Sculls (BM4x) - Final
This was Canada’s race. Taking the lead from the get-go, the Canadians rated high to hold off the Australians chasing hard in second. Poland and New Zealand crossed the half-way mark nearly level in third and fourth. They would chase each other down to the line, fighting for a spot on the podium.
In the final 500m, Canada increased their margin over Australia and charged for the line. Australia caught a crab in the final strokes and was unable to withstand a charging New Zealand who finished ahead in silver. Losing stamina, Poland finished further behind in fourth.
Results: CAN, NZL, AUS, POL, UKR, ITA
Taylor Perry – CAN – gold
“We had a plan and we stuck to it. It is so good to win, we are training with the senior quad all year and they are so fast.”
Lewis Hollows – NZL – silver
“We executed the first thousand exactly as we wanted. In the third 500, the Canadians were just faster. It is my first international medal and that’s pretty cool.”
Alexander Purnell – AUS- bronze
“We are overall very happy, this medal is just great. We found a good rhythm and kept it to the line.”
B-Final
The Germans are usually seen in A-Finals in this boat class at junior, under-23 and senior level, but were not in best form in yesterday’s semifinals. Today, they decided to take the lead in the B-Final, which they claimed by the 1000m mark, securing their lead with each stroke until the line ahead of Belarus and the Czech Republic.
