Lightweight men’s eight (LM8+) – Final
The preliminary race was won by the reigning World Champions Germany with France in second. But knowing the noise that the crowd could make, perhaps France could pull off a win. At the start it was Italy that jumped out the quickest. Italy was still in the lead with half the race gone. There was, however, very little in it with Germany closing on the Italians and the United States also very much on the pace.
Germany then did a piece and got their nose in front with Italy now in the position of trying to hold on. The Italians, rating 44, were hold on for all they were worth as France came storming through. In the close of the race France got into second with the United States belting on through to take the bronze medal.
Results: GER, FRA, USA, ITA, TUR
Florian Roller (4) – GER – gold
“I feel empty, but it feels so good to be World Champion. Italy started very quick, then we had a good move and we stayed in front for the last 500m.”
Fabrice Moreau (s) – FRA – silver
“The young guys were all here for me. It is my last race, my last Championships. To win a silver with them is amazing. Thank you.”
John Carlson (c) – USA – bronze
“It was an awesome and super close race, I thought I was going to have a heart attack in the last 500m. So great to win a medal.”
