China Dominates at 16th Asian Rowing Championships
Iran won the only other gold medal with a win to Aghel Habibian in the lightweight men’s single sculls.
As dominant as China was in the gold medal standing, the fight for minor medals and finals placings was outstanding. India (5), Kazakhstan (4) were multi silver medal winners, whilst the spread of remaining silver and bronze medals ranged over some 11 other nations – including Thailand, Japan, Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei.
Hosted by the Chinese Rowing Association and the Asian Rowing Federation (ARF), nearly 500 athletes, coaches, officials and guests celebrated both the nations dinner and the traditional moon festival during the championships. At the annual ARF Congress, President Wang Shi outlined his ambitious vision of developing 300 rowing clubs in three years whilst FISA President Jean-Christophe Roland took the occasion to explain FISA’s strategic planning process in preparation for the February 2017 Extraordinary Congress – where events for the Olympic programme will be voted upon.
