Entries are in for the combined World Rowing Championships of senior, under-23 and junior rowers to take place at the Willem-Alexander Baan international regatta course in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The World Rowing Federation (FISA) has received entries for 1890 competitors coming from 70 countries.

Joining the three regattas into one is a first for rowing. In an Olympic year the World Rowing Championships usually combines non-Olympic ‘international’ boat classes with the World Rowing Junior Championships. For this regatta, in an extraordinary effort by the Royal Netherlands Rowing Federation and the Rotterdam Organising Committee, the World Rowing Under 23 Championships will join in as well to make a massive event.

A total of 41 boat classes will be contested – 13 junior, 21 under-23 and seven senior. Both the United States and Germany have entered a full contingent with Italy (37 boats) also coming with a large number.

The regatta sees one of the highest turn-outs ever at the under-23 level with nearly 900 athletes entered. Of these 29 nations are entered in the lightweight men’s single sculls. There is also a large entry list for the men’s and women’s single sculls; both have 26 entries.

At the senior level the 2014 World Champion in the lightweight women’s single sculls, Eveline Peleman of Belgium will be aiming to add another World Championship title to her collection. Peleman will be up against Anja Noske of Germany, the 2015 World Champion Zoe McBride and 19 other nations.

In the lightweight men’s single sculls Luka Radonic of Croatia comes to Rotterdam after taking a gold and two silvers through this season’s World Rowing Cup series. Radonic goes into this regatta as the favourite against 24 other scullers including the reigning European Champion Lukas Babac of Slovakia and Paul O’Donovan of Ireland who is competing in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
