Junior Women’s Four (JW4-) – Final

Germany established themselves as the crew to beat coming through to this final and they got away quickly ahead of Italy. The reigning World Champions, the United States were at the back of the field. Italy then did a push and closed on Germany. The Germans may have not expected this as these boat went through the third 500 together. Had the Germans gone out too hard? Now the United States were moving up and they’d gotten into the bronze medal spot ahead of Great Britain.

Italy now had the lead with 500m left to row. Germany tried desperately to get back on top. It was neck-and-neck coming into the last 100m. Germany had found a second wind and got back in front. Germany had done it. A valent effort by Italy gave them second and a line of three boats crossed for bronze. The photo finish gave the United States bronze.

Germany’s crew of Mueller, Huebener, Arndt and Oertel had set a new junior World Best Time. 6:42.17 was 0,29 of a second faster than the former time set in 2012 by China.

B-final

Croatia had a very good start for today’s racing. They had come through the repechages and then missed out in the A-final when they raced in the semifinals earlier this week. They still had the lead going through the middle of the race with Hungary and Poland the closest challengers. The plucky Croatians held the lead right to the end with Poland getting the better of Hungary at the line.
