Junior Women’s Single Sculls (JW1x) – Final

Italy and Belarus had won their respective semifinals yesterday. But conditions were very different today and the winner was likely to be the one that could handle rough tail wind conditions. Italy’s Clara Guerra had the fastest qualifying time and she was the first to show ahead of France and Belarus. Guerra then proved absolute superiority by breaking clean away from the rest of the field. Guerra owns the junior World Best Time in this boat class after setting it earlier this week. Behind Guerra it was Germany’s Alicia Bohn who led the chasing group. France’s Margaux Bailleul was in third.

Now Karolien Florijn of the Netherlands began to move. Florijn is the daughter of and Olympic rower and she had the crowd behind her. With every stroke Florijn moved on France and Germany. Out in front, though, was the phenomenal Guerra. Just 250m left to row and Florijn had nearly caught Bailleul. Crossing the line in first was Italy, then came Bohn with Florijn snatching bronze by just 0.17 of a second over France.

B-final

Rachel Williams of Belgium had the early lead with the United States chasing hard. Eliza Kallfelz of the United States had already raced in other races and she was doing a fine effort today as she took over in the lead and stayed there until the end.
