Oxford Brookes University wins overall BUCS Regatta

Racing took place over 2000m in 48 events, 24 for men and 24 for women, divided into beginner, intermediate and championship categories.

Oxford Brookes University won the overall regatta and Victor Ludorum trophy with 1,323 points, followed by the University of London in second position with 1,067 points and Newcastle University in third with 840 points.

Oxford Brookes University was also the strongest overall in the men’s events, while the University of London earned the most point in women’s events.

The University of London notably took gold in four women’s championship events – the pair, the quadruple sculls, the coxed four and the lightweight single. A number of these athletes doubled up, winning gold in more than one boat class. Alessandra French and Georgia Statham finished first in both the women’s championship pair and coxed four. Robyn Hart-Winks won the women’s championship lightweight single and championship quadruple sculls. Charlotte Hodgkins-Byrne and Lottie Bruce were part of the gold medal winning women’s championship coxed four and women’s quadruple sculls.

Adding to their win at the Women’s Oxford Cambridge Boat Race in early April, the University of Cambridge won the BUCS Regatta women’s championship eight with a nearly identical line-up. Members of the Cambridge’s women’s eight crew (Myriam Goudet, Alice White, Holly Hill and Thea Zabell) also doubled up and took gold in the BUCS women’s championship four. Goudet and Hill have also previously medalled internationally at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

Oxford Brookes University took gold in five men’s championship events, including the pair, the double, the four, the eight and the lightweight pair.

It was the fourth consecutive year that Oxford Brookes University won the men’s championship eight. Nearly all members of the eight have also raced internationally in the eight at the World Rowing under-23 or junior championships.

Jamie Copus, from Oxford Brookes University, is a junior world silver medallist in the men’s eight and an under-23 world silver medallist in the lightweight men’s four and lightweight men’s quadruple sculls. At this year’s BUCS Regatta, Copus was not only part of the men’s championship eight, but he also won gold in the double sculls and lightweight pair.

Matthew Aldridge and Rory Gibbs from the Oxford Brookes men’s championship eight added two further gold medals in the pair and four.  Both athletes have raced twice internationally at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
