World Rowing partners with RowZambezi
RowZambezi are embarking on a fund-raising initiative in support of the KRRC which is being built in Zambia in a strategic collaboration between World Rowing and the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF).
In late July 2018, RowZambezi will undertake a 900km rowing expedition along the Kafue River in Zambia. The expedition will first travel nearly 500km through the second largest game park in Africa, where they will encounter the local wildlife including hippos, crocodiles and elephants, as well as witnessing a total eclipse of the moon. They will then row a further 400km through the swamps and flood plains of the Kafue flats, before finishing at the site of the KRRC itself.
This will be the third rowing expedition RowZambezi has organised, having already rowed 1500km of the Zambezi River in previous years which raised $50,000 for clean water projects. The 2018 expedition will have three triple sculling boats and an international crew of 18 rowers, including Olympic athletes from six nations: Namibia, South Africa, Great Britain, United States,Zambia and Zimbabwe. The expedition will also help train rowingcoaches from Southern Africa.
The RowZambezi 2018 Kafue Expedition will raise money in support of clean water, coaching and conservation projects to be run from the Kafue River & Rowing Centre in Zambia.”
Rowing’s relationship with clean water is at the very heart of our sport. This is why the rowing family has united behind our partnership with WWF and now with RowZambezi,” says World Rowing’s Executive Director, Matt Smith.” The KRRC will be a unique and valuable source of knowledge and research -not just for the Kafue area but for the world. The funds we will receive from the 2018 RowZambezi expedition will be a tremendous help as we prepare for the first phase of construction.”
“I am delighted and very proud to be partnering with World Rowing as we embark on this tough but exciting expedition which will be the first of its kind to scull the ecologically important Kafue River and its wetlands,” says Tim Cook, RowZambezi Expedition Leader. “Clean water is crucial to our sport and we hope to inspire athletes and their supporters as we explore this important region of Southern Africa in rowing boats.”
