The World Rowing Federation, FISA, is pleased to announce that the 2018 World Rowing Coastal Championships will take place from 11-14 October 2018 on the west coast of Canada in Victoria, British Columbia.

The location of racing will be along the coastline of Sidney, just north of Victoria and already organisers have seen a groundswell of support. There will be 48 coastal boats supplied for the championships and these will all be available for purchase by rowing clubs following the event. Rowing Canada is hoping that this will help extend the reach of coastal rowing around Canada.

“The potential for coastal rowing in Canada is immense,” FISA President Jean-Christophe Rolland said in Rowing Canada’s media release, “and we know that hosting the event will give a big boost to this exciting discipline of our sport. We are pleased that this event will take place for the first time in North America.

“We would like to congratulate the organising committee for their successful bid to host the coastal championships and we appreciate knowing that time is limited between now and the start of the event in October. Rowing Canada has chosen an ideal location to host the 2018 event and we invite the world to travel to Victoria.”

Racing will take place in six boat classes; the women’s and men’s coxed quadruple sculls (CW4x+ and CM4x+), the women’s and men’s solo (CW1x and CM1x) and the women’s and men’s double sculls (CW2x and CM2x).

Last year over 600 competitors took part in the 2017 World Rowing Coastal Championships in Thonon, France. Held on a lake for the first time, Lake Geneva, the 2018 championships returns to the sea. In October the average day time temperatures are around 14 degrees Celsius with water temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius.
