For immediate release
Lausanne, 2 August 2018
More than 750 rowers are preparing to race at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, Czech Republic. Rowers from 57 countries will race from 8 to 12 August 2018 at the venue that last year hosted the European Rowing Championships. Racice is about one hour’ drive north of Prague.
An impressive field in the junior men’s single sculls has rowers from 38 countries entered including the return of last year’s junior champion Clark Dean of the United States and silver medallist Moritz Wolff of Germany. The continental spread includes entries from Asia, Africa, North and South America, Europe and also Oceania’s Vanuatu.
Racing in the junior women’s single sculls are rowers from 29 countries including the 2017 junior champion Ester Briz Zamorano of Spain. Briz Zamorano will compete against Caitlin Govaert of Belgium, who finished fourth in 2017 as well as many athletes who are new to international junior racing.
Germany and the United States are sending the largest teams, both with a full quota of 14 crews – one for each boat class. They are followed by Italy with 13 crews. The boat class total includes one new boat class for 2018. The junior women’s coxed four has been added as part of all World Rowing championship events now having gender equity.
For rowers to be eligible to compete at the World Rowing Junior Championships, they must be 18 years of age or under. A rower can compete as a junior until 31 December of the year in which he or she reaches the age of 18; after that date the rower advances to the under-23 category.
Live race tracker, live streaming, results, race reports, photo gallery and live blog will be available throughout the regatta on www.worldrowing.com, as well as updates on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The official hashtag for the event is: #WRJChamps, #Racice2018.
