Brest prepares for European Rowing Under 23 Championships

Hosted in Belarus by the city of Brest the Brest Regional Centre of Olympic Reserve is the competition venue situated in the centre of Brest with over 400 athletes racing.

The regatta course was upgraded and reopened in 2007 with the venue hosting the 2009 European Rowing Championships. A year later Brest hosted the World Rowing Under 23 Championships and now the best under-23s in Europe are ready to race.

There are 21 boat classes on the schedule with the men’s single sculls receiving entries from 17 countries. This comes from a total of 25 nations heading to Brest. The women’s single sculls also has a large field entered of 13 countries.

Entries include a mixture of athletes who have raced this year already at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships or the World Rowing Junior Championships or are attending their first ever international rowing event. There is also a number that come to this regatta after competing at the European Championships.

Cipran Huc and Stefan-Constantin Berariu of Romania finish first in the men’s four at the European Championships in Glasgow. This was after taking gold at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. They now join with two new teammates to race in the four at Brest.

Greece’s Sofia Asoumanaki also comes to these championships following the under-23 and European Championships. The Greek indoor rowing champion finished fourth at the under-23 championships. She will race with new partner, Anneta Kyridou in the women’s double sculls.

Racing in the lightweight women’s double sculls, Eleni Agioti of Greece comes to Brest following a second place finish at the World Rowing Junior Championships earlier this month. Agioti will pair up with Thomais Emmanouilidou who raced last month at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships where she finished fourth.

Junior bronze medallists, Patrik and Anton Loncaric of Croatia will race in the men’s pair. The brothers will be up against Stefanos Ntouskos and Spyridon Kalentzis of Greece. This is Ntouskous’s first time racing internationally while Kalentzis was fourth on the men’s pair at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
