Denmark has a strong tradition of indoor rowing with former national team rower Henrik Stephansen still holding the fastest time for lightweight men: 5:56.7 over 2000m. Then there’s Danish Olympic Champion Eskild Ebbesen who still holds the record for fastest in the 30-39-year-old men’s lightweight division. Ebbesen set the time in 2004 going 6:06.4. More recently former Danish national team rower, Jorgen Engelbrecht has been setting records in the 70-79-year-old age group. Engelbrecht has the 100m record of 0:16.5, the half-marathon record of 1:22.19.6, the marathon record of 2:51.14.8 as well as the 500m and 6000m record.

But it is the Faroese ‘watt-monster’ that all eyes will be focused on at these championships. Sverri Nielsen is Denmark’s men’s single sculler who finished seventh at the 2018 World Rowing Championships. Nielsen is also known for his speed on the indoor rowing machine, giving him the nickname, ‘watt-monster’. Nielsen won the 2017 European Rowing Indoor Championships in Paris where he set a new Danish record of 5:47.9 for 2000m.

“I am aiming to prepare well for the event so that I will know my limits and can execute my plan for the race,” says Nielsen. “If I can get under 5:50 min and perhaps set a new Danish record, then I will be happy. I don’t know too much about my competitors, I choose to focus more on my own performance.”

The championships are hosted by the Danish Rowing Federation in cooperation with Concept2 Denmark and the Bagsvaerd Rowing Club in Copenhagen and will take place in Gladsaxe.

The European Rowing Indoor Championships is an annual one-day event with races ranging from 500m to 2000m in length and divided into age groups. There are also relay events with teams of four completing 500m each.
