Trevor Jones (CAN)
Rising Star – February 2019
Talented 21-year-old Trevor Jones is already collecting a respectable medal haul. In 2018 the single sculler won World Rowing Under 23 Championship gold for the second year running. The Canadian tells us about life outside the boat and what he thinks about trying for another under-23 gold.
In 2019 it would be great to… come back and try to win a third under-23 World Championship gold and it would also be great to race at the senior level. We will see what happens at selections.
I first took up rowing when… someone recommended that I should try rowing because of my height (203cm tall) so I tried rowing one summer at our local club and really liked it. What keeps me coming back? The ability to always keep on improving.
I played hockey growing up… and I always liked the competitive aspect of the sport. When I stopped playing hockey and started rowing I was able to continue getting that competitiveness that I enjoyed in a different sport.
I have always trained in the single… I did well enough in selection trials to be selected for the single and I wanted to see where I stood on my own. I enjoy how it’s all on me.
I am halfway through my degree… at Trent University which is in Ontario, but since moving to the [Rowing Canada] National Training Centre I take online courses now. Going to school is a nice break as it adds a different aspect and change of pace to your life and gives you something else to do between training.
I spent the winter…training at the National Training Centre in Victoria.
My training focus right now is…to build up the fitness and get ready to race during the summer.
The erg is… a great tool for fitness. We don’t really use it too much but when we do it is a good way to both build and judge fitness.
My goal for 2019 is… to qualify a boat for the Olympics.
Long term I want… to see how long I can compete at the highest level.
To chill out I… watch hockey.
For fun I… play video games and hang out with friends.
