Women’s Quadruple Sculls (W4x) – Finals

A-Final

Germany and Poland won their heats two days ago and got to go directly to today’s final. Poland had to be the favourites as World and European Champions. Already within the first few strokes Poland had a bit of a lead. The crew of Kobus-Zawojska, Wieliczko, Springwald and Zillmann were the World Rowing Crew of the Year for 2018 and they look well on their way to Olympic qualification. Germany followed in second with the aim of staying close to the Poles. The Netherlands took bronze at last year’s World Rowing Championships and they were moving up on the two leaders.

The gap between crews closed right up at the half way point with Germany taking the lead with the Dutch moving into second. What had happened to Poland? But margins were close with just a second separating these crews. Now Ukraine came up to try and get in on the medals. Germany did a kick and won the race. The Dutch took second and Ukraine finished ahead of Poland. The World Champions had missed out.

“We expected to win. Each race is a new one so everyone has the chance, but we knew we had a good one. We got in front from the start and were able to control the race from there.”

“That was a tough race! We really enjoyed it until the last 500 meters, where Germany came through but it’s always a pleasure to race here. We feel comfortable racing here and looking forward to racing at World Rowing Cup II in Rotterdam.”

Yana Dementieva (s), Ukraine, Bronze
“Great race for us. This is our first regatta together as this crew was formed two weeks ago. We’re happy to take third. We’re all very happy and a little bit emotional.”

B-final

Two very young crews raced each other with France managing to dominate over Switzerland, despite Switzerland’s home support advantage.
