2019 Rules of Racing

The 2019 Statues and Rules of Racing updates inserts are printed on yellow paper.  If you have not yet received these updates, you should receive them in the near future.

In the yellow Rules updates pages, there was one update regarding the progressions that was left out of the printed version.  On page 191, Case 12: 41-48 entries the following special cases should be added to the end of the description of the progression:

  • Note the special case for 41-42 entries: there are no semi-finals G/H and the fourth and fifth place crews in the quarter-finals E/F/G/H go forward to final G.
  • Note the special case for 43 entries: the last crew in each semi-final G/H goes forward to final H; the remaining crews go to final G.

Translations of the Rules of Racing

Article 7 of the FISA statues states that “the official languages of FISA are French and English. In case of divergence, the English text prevails.”

While FISA publishes the Rules of Racing in both English and French,   there are times when the Rules in another local language can be helpful especially for education of umpires.  We are lucky to have a talented Umpire Corps who have taken it upon themselves to translate the Rules of Racing into multiple languages.

When we heard that Asma NIVAR (IRI) was in the process of translating the Rules of Racing in Farsi (to be available through the Islamic Republic of Iran Rowing Federation), we wondered into what other languages the Rules of Racing have been translated.

The Rules of Racing have been translated into Japanese version as follows:

FISA Umpire and Asian Rowing Federation Umpiring Commission member Young Sang Hwang <yshwang@airquay.com>, has translated the Rules of Racing into Korean.

We have also heard that the Rules have been translated into Chinese.

Statues and Rules of Racing for 2020 and beyond

The FISA Rules Working Group is currently working to prepare proposals of changes to the FISA Rules of Racing and Bye-Laws for the 2021-2024 Olympic cycle.   This is an ongoing process and proposals are accepted from all FISA stakeholders, including Umpires.  If you have a suggestion for a change in the Rules of Racing, please forward the suggestion to the Rules Working Group.
