World Rowing praised for good governance
World Rowing, the international governing body for the sport of rowing, has been recognised, as the organisation continues to further heighten its good governance standards and performance.
World Rowing continues to demonstrate the priority it is giving to good governance standards and practices, as illustrated again recently through the recent publication of the 4th ASOIF (Association of Summer Olympic International Federations) Governance Review and the 2022 IOC (International Olympic Committee) Gender Equality Survey.
As highlighted by the ASOIF evaluation report, our organisation is being recognised as a leading international sports federation on gender equality matters, with a 50% female representation on both the World Rowing Executive Committee and Council. This achievement was also highlighted in the 2022 IF Gender Equality Survey conducted by the IOC. Different initiatives implemented by World Rowing to grow the number of women coaches have been outlined, including amongst others, participating in the WSLA (Women’s Sport Leadership Academy) High Performance Coaches Programme or running a Women’s High Performance Coaches Network.
World Rowing is also being recognised for its commitment to diversity and inclusion with the recent creation of a Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Commission (GEDI).
World Rowing’s commitment to ensuring the athlete voice is at the centre of its decision making is demonstrated through the approval, in 2020, for the Athletes’ Commission Chair to be a full voting member of the World Rowing Executive Committee, with an election process now ongoing to determine membership of that Commission.
Meanwhile, critical safeguarding efforts have continued over recent years with significant work in the area of education and awareness. World Rowing’s approach to Safeguarding training & education is featured in the IOC’s Safeguarding Officer in Sport Certificate education programme.
“World Rowing is determined to remain in a continuous improvement mode with good governance standards at all levels of the organisation, in respect for our own history and culture, and in keeping up with the demands of modern sports governance” said World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland.
