Sixty-five National Olympic Committees will be competing in the Olympic Rowing Regatta at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Regatta, which will start Friday, 27 July, and run until 3 August, will take place at the Stade Nautique de Vaires-sur-Marne on the outskirts of Paris.

Following the conclusion of the Paris 2024 qualification for Rowing, a total of 502 athletes have qualified – 251 women and men each – in the 14 boat classes. It was confirmed last week that World Rowing would accept the IOC request to add an additional universality quota place for Sudan in the men’s single sculls, bringing the total number of athletes competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games regatta to 503.

Additionally, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has informed World Rowing that they have decided to declining the spot obtained at the World Rowing European Continental Qualification Regatta in Szeged, Hungary, in the women’s single sculls. According to the Qualification system, the spot has been reallocated by the World Rowing Executive Committee to the next highest placed crew in this event – in this case, to Slovenia.

At these Games, more than half of the rowers will be competing at their first-ever Olympic Regatta. Romania and the United States of America have qualified the greatest number of boats, with 12 boats each. This is followed by the Netherlands and Great Britain, both with ten boats. Host nation France has qualified five boats.

Competing at his sixth Olympic Games is Estonia’s Tonu Endrekson. The 45-year-old, competing in the men’s quadruple sculls, has two Olympic medals and is going after Olympic medal number three. The youngest competitor will be Frida Foldager of Denmark, aged 18, who qualified at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne in May.

The men’s single sculls event has 33 entries and all eyes will be on Oliver Zeidler of Germany. Zeidler comes to Paris after a B-final finish at the Tokyo Olympic but having won two consecutive World Rowing Championship titles since then. Facing him will be reigning Olympic champion, Stefanos Ntouskos of Greece, as well as Simon van Dorp of the Netherlands, who managed to beat Zeidler in their last confrontation ahead of the Games.

For the women, Karolien Florijn of the Netherlands has been dominating this boat class in the last couple of years, not losing a race since she switched out of the women’s four after Tokyo. It will be Florijn’s second Olympics and the same goes for her main competition, Tara Rigney of Australia. Competing at her fifth Olympic Games will be the reigning Olympic champion, Emma Twigg of New Zealand.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is coming from Romania, where the reigning Olympic and World Champions in the women’s double sculls will not defend their title together – Simona Radis will be competing in the women’s eight, while Ancuta Bodnar will be teamed up with Andrada-Maria Morosanu.

Rowing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will start on 27 July 2024 with finals being contested on 31 July, and 1, 2 and 3 August.
