Fantastic day for Romania at the 2024 European Rowing Under 23 Championships in Turkiye
Edirne played host to the 2024 European Rowing Under 23 Championships this past weekend – this was the first time that Turkiye was hosting a European Rowing championship.
And it was an incredible weekend for Romania, with nine gold medals! Their women team was particularly impressive, with a clean sweep of the sweep events, winning six out of their nine gold medals. The Romanian anthem was heard three times in a row for the last three races of the day, when they consecutively won gold in the men’s eight, the women’s double sculls and the women’s eight.
The host nation, Turkiye, also had a successful championship, with a total of seven medals – including three gold medals, in the lightweight men’s single sculls, men’s single sculls, and the lightweight women’s pair. It was particularly impressive to see Cevdet Ege Mutlu having a great sprint in the last 500, to overtake the AIN athlete Aleksandr Kovalskii and winning gold in the men’s single in front of his home crows.
Some gold medallists from the 2024 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Canada repeated their golden performances in Edirne. Jakub Wozniak and Konrad Domaski of Poland, and Andrada-Maria Morosanu and Iulia Balauca from Romania, won gold respectively in the men and women’s double sculls. Dimitra Kontou and Evangelia Anastasiadou of Greece dominated their final in the lightweight women’s double sculls – it was a third medal this summer for Kontou, after winning gold in St Catharines, and bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
