A significant milestone for the world of Rowing was celebrated a few days ago, as the one-year countdown began for the 2025 World Rowing Championships, set to take place in Shanghai at the state-of-the-art Shanghai Water Sports Centre in September 2025.

World Rowing Executive Director Vincent Gaillard addressed attendees during a fantastic ceremony, expressing the Federation’s excitement and gratitude. “It is a great privilege to be back in the stunning city of Shanghai today, for what is undoubtedly an important highlight for the sport of Rowing,” Gaillard said.

The ceremony not only launched the countdown to the 2025 World Rowing Championships, but also celebrated the 2024 edition of the renowned Head of the Shanghai River Regatta, an internationally acclaimed event now taking place annually in the heart of Shanghai, on the Suzhou Creek. These events highlighted Shanghai’s growing prominence as a world-class destination for Rowing, supported by strong partnerships with local authorities and organizations.

Gaillard praised the dedication of all stakeholders involved in bringing these events to life, offering special thanks to the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Shanghai Administration of Sports, local district governments and the Chinese Rowing Association, whose contributions continue to elevate the sport in China. “There is just no better place for our sport to thrive than the truly iconic, global city of Shanghai,” he said.

The 2025 World Rowing Championships are anticipated to be an extraordinary event, attracting the best rowers from around the world in a quest for World medals. “The outstanding support from local authorities, the world-class city and venue, and the dedicated organizing team are key ingredients for what promises to be a great success,” Gaillard remarked.

Looking ahead to the next year, World Rowing is focused on further elevating the event’s profile, aiming to draw more spectators, attract additional commercial partners, and deliver innovative broadcasting solutions that will captivate both on-site audiences and global viewers. Crucially, Gaillard emphasized the potential of the event to inspire the next generation of rowers in China, fostering a deep connection between the sport and the country’s youth.

“The collective support for this common endeavour is truly appreciated by all at World Rowing. Together, we are set to create an unforgettable experience, one that will showcase the very best of our sport and the vibrant city of Shanghai,” Gaillard concluded.

As the countdown begins, World Rowing looks forward to another year of collaboration, innovation, and preparation as Shanghai gears up to host one of the most prestigious rowing events on the global calendar.
