Named in homage to Lido Filippi, the renowned Italy-based manufacturer of rowing racing shells is organising an international regatta series this spring. In the past three editions, the event was national in scale, but this year, it will also feature an international component.

Athletes will compete in three initial qualification rounds: Mondello (Palermo) on March 28-30, Lazise (Bardolino) on May 2-4, and Taranto on May 23-25. The fourth and final round, effectively their homecoming, will be hosted in Marina di Castagneto from June 6-8, where Filippi’s famous shipyard is located. Each round will concurrently host both the Italian and international circuits.

In this final round, the Filippi Trophy will be awarded to the winning club of the Italian national circuit, while a total prize fund of €20,000 will be distributed among the winners of the international circuit. The best Junior and Para-Rowing athletes will also receive dedicated prizes and shopping vouchers.

In partnership with the Italian Rowing Federation, athletes will have the opportunity to rent boats and oars (all Filippi, of course). Rowers will accumulate points based on their performance: 10 points for 1st place, 6 for 2nd, 4 for 3rd, 2 for 4th, and 1 point for 5th place onwards. Scores from all four rounds will be combined into the overall standings.

The categories available for the international circuit include:
• Senior: M1x, W1x, Mix2x
• Junior: M1x, W1x, Mix2x
• Para-Rowing: PR3 Mix2x

One of the key motivations behind expanding the competition is the inclusion of Beach Sprints in the LA 2028 Olympic Games. Filippi hopes that regular elite-level competition will help ambitious athletes prepare to be match-fit in the still relatively new Beach Sprint discipline.

Raimondo Bongini, spokesperson for Filippi, says, “The level of interest is reflected in the high-quality initial entries for the first stage, with nine countries already securing spots. Notable entries include Lithuanian Beach Sprint star Zygmantas Galisanskis, Austrian 2024 World Rowing Coastal Champions Magdalena and Katharina Lobnig, and Norwegian international Siri Eva Kristiansen, as well as homegrown favourites Lucio Fugazzotto and Giovanni Ficarra.”

There is still time to enter this highly anticipated competition series, with the deadline for registration and boat rental for the first race in Mondello on March 24. To find out more and enter, visit their website here.
