World Rowing and Japan Sport Council unveil Connected Rowing to tackle societal challenges at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai
In a groundbreaking initiative, World Rowing and the Japan Sport Council (JSC) have unveiled Connected Rowing as a revolutionary tool to tackle societal challenges during the theme weeks of EXPO 2025 Osaka Kansai. This initiative was spotlighted during a workshop celebrating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, organised by UNITAR and the JSC under the theme “Co-Creating Cultures through Sport and Diplomacy.”
The Intentional Use of Sport for Sustainable Development featured compelling presentations and dynamic discussions on the pivotal role of sport in fostering social inclusion, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. The workshop highlighted sport’s strategic impact on contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A standout moment was a video message from World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland. Additionally, Masakuni Hosobuchi, co-opted council member of World Rowing, showcased exemplary case studies and strategic approaches under the theme “Case Studies and Strategic Approaches of World Rowing Utilising SDGs.” He was joined by Emma Sherry, Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, and Etsuko Yamada, Head of International Sport for Development at the JSC.
During the theme weeks session, two promising Japanese para rowers, Ayako Takano and Ryota Seto, in close collaboration with the Japan Rowing Association, conducted a Connected Rowing demonstration. Attendees had the chance to explore interactive exhibits featuring Connected Rowing powered by cutting-edge sports technology. This innovative approach harnesses physical activity to address societal challenges, promoting sustainable development and peace.
“Congratulations to JSC for seizing the opportunity of such a prestigious event to promote and celebrate Sport for Development and Peace. Associating World Rowing with this initiative is a testament to the profound impact sport can have. This is a genuine and concrete activation of the partnership between JSC and World Rowing”, said World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland.
“We are elated to have had the opportunity to highlight our groundbreaking initiatives in advancing international joint research with World Rowing during the Theme Weeks at EXPO 2025 Osaka Kansai, added Satoshi Ashidate, JSC President and CEO. We firmly believe that virtual rowing is a potent tool for addressing societal challenges. By deeply exploring the medical science aspects within the sports domain, we aim to showcase how insights gained from high-performance activities can be harnessed to create a profound impact on society.
