Rowers to watch and how to follow the 2025 European Rowing Under 23 Championships
The European Rowing season continues in Czechia for the 2025 European Rowing Under 23 Championships. More than 430 athletes from 27 European member federations are set to compete in Racice.
Many of these athletes have just competed a few weeks ago at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Poznan or at the World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Trakai. Here are the rowers to watch racing this upcoming weekend.
The men’s and women’s double sculls often attract large entries and this year is no exception. The men’s double sculls is a packed field and the favourites must be Italy’s Marco Prati and Josef Marvucic, who just won a gold medal at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Chasing them will be Konstantinos Giannoulis and Iason Mouselimis, winners of the silver medal in Trakai a few weeks ago. The women’s double sculls sees several of the competitors from the 2025 World Under 23 Championships returning, with Eleni Diavati of Greece looking to grab another gold medal at an international rowing event this summer, with new partner Nefeli Ntara.
The men’s single sculls event will see recent World Rowing U23 Champion, Cevdet Ege Mutlu of Turkiye, take on Czechia’s Antonin Strelba and Denmark’s August Wisholm. It will be interesting to see the progress of Marco Selva of Italy or Leonardo Salerno of Switzerland after another year of training. The women’s single sculls has eleven entries and all eyes will be on the reigning World Rowing Under 23 Champion, and Paris Olympian, Aurelia-Maxima Janzen of Switzerland. Doris Meinbek of Estonia and Roby Cop of Slovenia will be looking to challenge the young Swiss phenom.
Romania often dominates the men’s and women’s pair, especially at the under-23 level. Cosmin Plesescu and Fabrizo-Alexandru Scripcariu will have to face Enes Biber and Aytimur Selcuk of Turkey, fresh off a World Rowing Under 23 title in Poznan. Italy and Lithuania could also be in the mix but they both have relatively new crews lining up. The women’s pair will also see a new crew for Romania, battle against Austria, Switzerland and LIthuania.
Moving on to the bigger boats. The men’s quadruple sculls has ten entries, but lots of crews with tons of experience of international rowing, including Poland returning all four silver medallists from the World U23 Championships. They are certainly the crew to watch in Racice. The women’s quadruple sculls has only nine entries, and will likely see Greece, with Olympic bronze medallist Dimitra Kontou on board, taking the honours.
The women’s four has seven entries but the World U23 Championships’ silver medallists from Romania will be competing in Czechia. There are nine entries in the men’s four and Romania, Italy and Denmark are definitely in the running for a medal.
The European Under 23 Championships will also have quite a few lightweight categories being raced. In the lightweight men’s double sculls, it will be a rematch of the World Championships between Germany and Poland, who finished second and third respectively. The lightweight women’s double sculls is likely to go to Greece with the World Champions racing again in Czechia.
Rounding it out are the eights. The men’s eight has seven entries, including Ireland, including their bronze medallists from the men’s double sculls in Poznan. In a five-boat battle in the women’s eight, the odds are in Romania’s favour, although they will have a face a tough Austrian crew. And for the first-time ever, the mixed eight will be contested at the European Under 23 Championships, with six entries from Czechia, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania and Ukraine. We can’t wait to see how this one unfolds!
