The Romanian Rowing Federation marked a historic milestone last week, celebrating its 100th anniversary with a Centennial Gala held at the Unirea Hall of the Romanian Parliament Palace. More than 600 guests attended the event.

World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland and soon-to-be Vice President Annamarie Phelps were among the international leaders present to honour the Federation’s century of achievements. They joined Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia of Romania, Romanian Olympic Committee President Mihai Covaliu, and National Sports Agency President Constantin-Bogdan Matei, along with generations of Romanian Olympic and World Champions, coaches, partners, and supporters.

Throughout the evening, the Federation recognised key milestones and figures across its history, awarding distinctions to pioneers, Olympic medallists, and outstanding contributors. The titles of Crew of the Year and Coach of the Year went to 2025 World and European champions Magdalena Rusu and Simona Radiș (W2-) and to Dorin Alupei, respectively.

A special tribute celebrated the extraordinary career and legacy of Elisabeta Lipă—five-time Olympic champion, eight-time Olympic medallist, and widely regarded as the greatest rower of the 20th century. As President of the Romanian Rowing Federation, Lipă has played a central role in revitalising Romanian Rowing, guiding the nation back to the top ranks of the sport, including a third-place finish on the medal table at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Alongside the gala, a dedicated pop-up Romanian Rowing Museum showcased 100 years of Romanian rowing through historical exhibits, medals, trophies, and iconic racing boats.

“The Centennial Gala was not only a celebration of our history, but also a moment of deep gratitude for all those who have built and carried this sport forward,” said Elisabeta Lipă. “Romanian rowing has always been defined by hard work and the belief that nothing is impossible. I am proud of the generations of champions who have raised our flag and confident that another century of excellence lies ahead.”

The celebration marked a defining moment for Romanian rowing—honouring its rich past while inspiring the next generations who will shape its future.
