In memoriam: Davide Tizzano
The international Rowing community is deeply saddened by the passing of Davide Tizzano, President of the Italian Rowing Federation and one of the most respected figures in the history of Italian Rowing. An Olympic champion, visionary leader and lifelong ambassador for the sport, Tizzano leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that spans decades, both on and off the water.
Born in Naples in 1968, Davide Tizzano was introduced to Rowing at a young age and quickly developed a lifelong bond with the sport. His talent and determination saw him rise to the very top of international rowing, becoming a two-time Olympic gold medallist, first in the Men’s Quadruple Sculls at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, and later in the Men’s Double Sculls at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. His achievements placed him among the most successful Italian rowers of all time.
Following his competitive career, Tizzano continued to contribute to sport at the highest level. He remained closely connected to Rowing while also expanding his sporting horizons, including involvement in elite sailing competitions.
In November 2024, Davide Tizzano was elected President of the Italian Rowing Federation, a role he assumed with passion, integrity and a clear vision for the future of the sport in Italy. Beyond national borders, he also served as President of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games, reflecting his broader contribution to international sport.
Davide Tizzano was widely admired not only for his Olympic success, but for his humanity, leadership and unwavering dedication to Rowing.
World Rowing extends its deepest condolences to Davide Tizzano’s family, friends, and the entire Italian Rowing community. His legacy will continue to live on through the athletes he inspired, the institutions he helped shape, and the enduring impact of his lifelong commitment to Rowing.
