A new year in Rowing always comes with familiar rhythms, but 2026 also carries a particular sense of momentum. Across disciplines, continents and generations, the sport continues to evolve, bringing more people into the boat and more stories to the surface. From living rooms to city centres, iconic venues to sandy shorelines, here are six moments that will shape the year ahead.

1. Racing Without Borders – World Rowing Virtual Indoor Championships, presented by Concept 2

Indoor/Connected Rowing has long been the great equaliser, a place where geography disappears and only effort remains. The World Rowing Virtual Indoor Championships, presented by Concept 2, once again invite athletes of all backgrounds to test themselves on the same stage, from home gyms and club boathouses around the world. With entries still open, the 2026 edition promises another global meeting point for the Rowing community, and perhaps even a glimpse of what’s next, with hopes growing around an in-person World Rowing Indoor Championships later in the year.

2. A New Sprint Takes Shape – World Rowing Shanghai Sprints

Every now and then, a new event arrives that feels different from the first stroke. September’s inaugural World Rowing Shanghai Sprints is one of those moments. Set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most dynamic cities, this new competition aims to bring Rowing closer to urban audiences, with short, explosive races designed for intensity and spectacle. It’s a bold step, and one that could redefine how sprint racing is experienced. Last weekend of September, embedded in the Head of the Shanghai River Regatta, it promises to be fast and furious.

3. Orange on the Water – World Rowing Championships, Amsterdam

Few countries live Rowing quite like the Netherlands, and in August the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam are expected to reflect that passion in full colour. With the stands, shorelines and waterways awash in orange, the world’s best crews will converge for the sport’s flagship event from 24 to 30 August on the iconic Bosbaan. For athletes, it’s the culmination of years of work; for fans, it’s the purest expression of Rowing at its highest level. So many stories: will we see both eights winning again, this time on home waters? Will Zeidler beat Van Dorp at home? Is Karolien Florijn due for an epic comeback?

4. Where Waves Meet Speed – Beach Sprint Rowing in Qingdao, China

Fast, technical and unpredictable, Beach Sprint Rowing continues to carve out its own identity, and its next chapter will unfold in Qingdao, China this October. As the discipline grows in scale and confidence, so too does its appeal, drawing new athletes and new audiences. Expect dramatic finishes, fearless racing and another step forward for one of Rowing’s most exciting formats, on the road to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

5. Lifelong Rowers, One Lake – Masters in Bled

There is something uniquely powerful about Masters Rowing: the reminder that the love for the sport doesn’t fade with time. In September, Bled will welcome what is expected to be a (close) record number of Masters entries, bringing together generations of rowers united by shared experience and competitive spirit. Against one of the most picturesque backdrops in the sport, this event is as much about community as it is about racing. Don’t forget to get your Masters membership!

6. Pausing to Celebrate – World Rowing Awards

Before the year truly picks up the pace, the Rowing world will come together in just two weeks’ time for the World Rowing Awards. It’s a moment to pause, reflect and celebrate the performances that inspired, the journeys that mattered, and the people who continue to shape the sport. In a season defined by movement, the Awards offer a reminder of why these moments matter.

From ergs to oceans, city centres to historic courses, 2026 promises stories worth following. Wherever Rowing takes you this year, World Rowing will be there to tell them.
