EVENT DESCRIPTION

The top event for the year for Under 23 rowers is the World Rowing Under 23 Championships (WRU23CH). The championships usually take place in July and attract up to 1000 rowers from around the world. There are 22 boat classes to compete in, including eight lightweight boat classes.

The top event for the year for Under 19 rowers is the World Rowing Under 19 Championships (WRU19CH). The championships usually take place in August and attract up to 1000 rowers from around the world.

In 2022, the WRU23CH and the WRU19CH will be a combined event.

ELIGIBILITY

World Rowing Championships are open to all member federations. A rower may compete in an Under 23 event until 31st of December of the year in which he reaches the age of 22.

A rower may compete in a Under 19 rowing event until 31st of December of the year in which he reaches the age of 18. Athletes must be eligible under the relevant rules. To represent a country in a World Rowing Championship, a competitor shall be a citizen of that country. He or she must be able to prove this by showing an official document (passport or identity card). In exceptional cases, the Executive Committee may make exceptions. Rowers may only compete at the World Rowing Championships if they have submitted a signed commitment form to World Rowing before accreditation may be issued at a World Rowing Event.

ABOUT THE VENUE

Varese is located in the Northern part of Italy, 55km north of Milan. The town lies at the foot of the Campo dei Fiori mountain range overlooking Lake Varese. It has a population of approximately 80,000.

Lake Varese, is 8.8 km long and 4.5 km wide. It has hosted the Coupe de la Jeunesse in 2007, 2012 European Rowing Championships and 2013 World Rowing Masters Regatta, the 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, the 2015 World Rowing Cup the 2016 World Rowing Cup I and the 2021 European Rowing Championships. In 2023 Varese will host World Rowing Cup II.

Lake Varese has been part of Natura 2000. This is the European Union’s large system of protected areas, which safeguard rare or endangered species and habitats.
