The International Rowing Federation, FISA, chose Dominguez when one spot opened up due to a confirmed double up in the United States Olympic rowing team.

Dominguez finished fourth in the women’s single at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Poznan, Poland, last month. This was one position outside of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics and five seconds behind third place getter, Serbia.

The Spanish sculler made history at the 2004 Athens Olympics when she became the first female rower from Spain to make an A Final at the Olympics. Dominguez finished sixth in that race. It was her second Olympic appearance – at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Dominguez raced in the lightweight double.

Dominguez fills the spot made possible when USRowing announced that they would double up with one athlete at Beijing. Anna Cummins will race in both the women’s pair and the women’s eight.

Executive Director of FISA Matt Smith commented, “FISA is very thankful for USRowing’s appreciation of the situation and openness on this decision. Now Spain becomes rowing’s 61st country that will participate at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.”

Dominguez will be Spain’s sole representative in rowing at the Beijing Olympics.
