Climate Action

We take action to address climate change and its impacts by reducing our carbon footprint to contribute to SDG 13:

Today, climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our society. The effects of global warming are increasingly visible and pose real threats to communities, wildlife and natural habitats across the planet.

World Rowing strives to take concrete measures to manage its carbon footprint in order to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.

It will therefore measure its carbon footprint in order to understand how it impacts the environment to take steps to reduce that impact and compensate for unavoidable impacts.  World Rowing will also collaborate with equipment manufactures to reduce the environmental impact of equipment manufacture and disposal.

World Rowing’s actions to address climate change include:
  • Measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions related to all World Rowing’s activities, on an annual basis, through a partnership with the carbon accounting platform Greenly. The accurate assessment of World Rowing’s carbon footprint is an essential first step in order to identify areas for emission reduction, or offset.
  • Becoming a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change initiative “Sports for Climate Action (S4CA)”. This network unites sport actors under a set of principles, objectives, and requirements. It provides guidance, shares best practices and provides a platform to display climate leadership. Through the framework, World Rowing is committing to halving emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2040.
  • Exploring measures to extend the measurement, reporting, reduction and offset of emissions to all Organising Committees of World Rowing events.
  • Committing to the Sports for Nature Framework (S4N), which aims to deliver transformative nature-positive action across sports by 2030 and beyond, enabling sports to collectively champion nature and contribute to its protection and restoration. Acting for nature can help address climate change, one of the biggest drivers of nature loss.
