Indoor Adaptive Rowing

The World Rowing Indoor Adaptive Rowing (IAR) categories are a seven-category structure for Indoor Rowing for athletes with different physical, vision, intellectual, and coordination impairments.

CATEGORIES DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS

The following Indoor Adaptive Rowing (IAR) categories are recognised by World Rowing for Indoor Rowing:

 

At World Rowing Indoor events, only World Rowing has the right to review entries with regard to a competitor’s impairment as observed in competition and whether the competitor is entered in the appropriate IAR category. World Rowing may apply sanctions or cancel results based on the findings of such review.

 

PROCESS for ATHLETES WITHOUT ANY CLASSIFICATION

New athletes who do not have any classification/eligibility (PR, Invictus, Virtus or IBSA) can apply for a World Rowing Indoor Adaptive Rowing Categorisation here:

The Medical Diagnostics Form for Indoor Adaptive Rowing Categorisation and mandatory supporting documentation must be submitted with the online form.

 

PROCESS for ATHLETES ALREADY CLASSIFIED

Competitors who already have one of the following eligibilities may request the appropriate IAR categorisation without any additional documentation or re-assessment:

==> Para Rowing Sport Classes (international and national) (PR1, PR2, PR3)

==> Invictus Games Categorisation

==> Virtus Eligibility (IAR6 only)

==> IBSA Sport Class (B1, B2, B3) (IAR5 only)

 

Please see to which IAR category each eligibility corresponds below:

*Athletes with a PR1 national or international Para Rowing classification will automatically be entered in IAR2, unless a request is submitted to World Rowing to be considered for IAR1.

**Athletes with a PR3-PI national or international Para Rowing classification will automatically be entered in IAR5, unless a request is submitted to World Rowing to be considered for IAR3.

==> 2026 World Rowing Indoor Championships – Birmingham, GBR ==> Sunday, 25 October 2026 – 23:59 UTC.

==> 2027 European Rowing Indoor Championships – Dresden, GER ==> Sunday, 13 December 2026 – 23:59 UTC.

==> 2027 World Rowing Virtual Indoor Championships – virtual ==> Sunday, 10 January 2027 – 23:59 UTC.
