2022 World Rowing Cup II, Poznan, Poland / World Rowing/Benedict Tufnell

The third and final event in the 2024 World Rowing Cup series will be taking place in Poznan, Poland, from 14-16 June, 2024. The event will determine the overall winner of the 2024 World Rowing Cup Series, with only 10 points separating the Netherlands and Great Britain at the moment.

The 2024 World Rowing Cup III has entries from 40 nations across the 23 boat classes. Australia have sent the largest team with 52 athletes in 13 of the boat classes – including two women’s eights who will be up against development teams from the Netherlands and Romania.

The event will be the last international racing opportunity before the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Some of the larger nations, such as Great Britain, the Netherlands, or even Romania, have opted to use this regatta to test their LA 2028 hopefuls at the international level.

The event also has entries from many of the crews that recently qualified at the 2024 World Rowing Final Olympic & Paralympic Qualification Regatta – France’s lightweight doubles, Switzerland’s men’s four and women’s single sculls, Italy’s PR3 mixed coxed four, Denmark’s women’s pair, and many more.

The largest boat class is the women’s single sculls with 23 entries. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver and bronze medallists – Anna Prakaten, now representing Uzbekistan, and Magdalena Lobnig of Austria – will both be looking for the podium as a boost of confidence before the Games. A standout surprise is perhaps Anneta Kyridou of Greece, who will be racing for the USA in this boat class.

In the PR3 Mix2x, we will see the first appearance of the reigning World Rowing Champions, World Best Time holders, and 2023 World Rowing Para Crew of the Year, Nikki Ayers and Jed Altschwager of Australia, as they take on the newly crowned European Champions from Great Britain – Annabel Caddick and Sam Murray.

The PR3 Mix4+ has not been contested at the World Rowing Cups yet this season – no doubt the World silver medallists from the USA will be eager to test themselves against the European crews, who had the chance to race at the 2024 European Rowing Championships earlier this season.

The Netherlands are currently in the lead of the 2024 World Rowing Cup points, with 128. They are followed by Great Britain with 118, and Italy with 77.

What is the World Rowing Cup?

The World Rowing Cup is an annual series of three regattas that, traditionally, act as a lead-up to the World Rowing Championships. This year, the World Rowing Cup series travelled to Varese, Italy; Lucerne, Switzerland; and Poznan, Poland. World Rowing Cups are held over three days with a progression system from heats through to finals. Racing at the World Rowing Cup includes the 14 Olympic boat classes and a selection of International boat classes. Para-rowing is contested at some World Cups. Each Olympic boat class earns points based on the finishing order. The highest placing boat from a country is awarded the following points:

1st = 8 points, 2nd = 6 points, 3rd = 5 points, 4th = 4 points, 5th = 3 points, 6th = 2 points, 7th = 1 point.
