LA28 athlete quota confirmed

The countdown to the Olympic Games LA28 is officially on. With just two years remaining until the world’s greatest sporting celebration returns to Southern California, excitement is building for an edition of the Games that will blend Olympic tradition with innovation—and provide rowing with a historic platform.

From 14–30 July 2028, the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad will bring together the world’s best athletes across 51 sports at more than 40 venues spread throughout Los Angeles and beyond. In a first for a Summer Olympic Games since London 1948, no new permanent competition venues are being constructed, with organisers instead embracing iconic existing facilities, natural landscapes, and world-renowned sporting arenas.

For rowing, LA28 will showcase the sport across two spectacular Long Beach venues, celebrating both its rich Olympic heritage and its exciting future.

Returning Home: Classic Rowing at Marine Stadium

Marine Stadium holds a special place in rowing history. Built for the rowing competitions at the 1932 Olympic Games, it was the first purpose-built man-made rowing course in the United States and will once again welcome the world’s best crews nearly a century later.

The venue will stage the Olympic rowing regatta, with 12 medal events contested as athletes chase the ultimate prize in the sport. It will also make history by hosting rowing competition at the Paralympic Games for the first time, adding another landmark chapter to its legacy.

A New Olympic Chapter: Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints

LA28 will also mark a defining moment for rowing as Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints makes its Olympic debut.

Fast, dynamic and made for spectators, Beach Sprints combine a beach start, a short sprint through the surf, and head-to-head racing on the water before athletes return to the sand in a thrilling finish.

The event will take place at Belmont Shore in Long Beach, where the Pacific Ocean provides a stunning backdrop for rowing’s newest Olympic discipline. With more than 11 miles of connected waterways and over five miles of sandy coastline, Belmont Shore offers an ideal setting for one of the most exciting additions to the LA28 programme.
