Clean-Ups
Adopt a Beach – Marine litter & monitoring programme to tackling plastic pollution
The “Adopt a Beach” campaign by WWF is a citizen science initiative aimed at combating plastic pollution along the Mediterranean coastline. Launched in 2021 by WWF Greece, the programme has since expanded to include WWF Tunisia and WWF Türkiye, forming the “Adopt a Beach MED” network.
Türkiye – As part of the World Rowing – WWF Healthy Waters Alliance, and in partnership with the EU BlueMissionMed Project and DEKAFOK, rowing clubs from Türkiye joined WWF Türkiye’s “Adopt a Beach” initiative. Volunteers took action on Kleopatra Beach in Manavgat, cleaning and monitoring plastic pollution along the coastline.
- The initiative was implemented alongside the 2025 European Rowing Coastal and Beach Sprint Championships, held in Manavgat, Türkiye, from 8 to 12 October 2025.

Italy – The Italian Rowing Federation (FIC) collaborates with WWF Italy to include the rowing community in protecting and restoring Italian beaches.
- The Adopt a Beach programme will enable Italian rowing clubs to involve their volunteers, coaches, and rowers in actively maintaining local beaches, safeguarding both our planet and the places where we row.
Seabed Clean-Up
- Oslo, Norway – a seabed and shoreline clean-up week led by World Rowing Healthy Waters Alliance Ambassador Martin Helseth is planned for the week of June 3–8, 2025.

- Genoa, Italy – during 2024 World Rowing Coastal Championships and Beach Sprint Finals working together, the WR & WWF Healthy Waters Alliance, WWF-Italy, the Event Organising Committee, and a local NGO (Spazzapnea) organised a Seabed Clean-up with a team of divers at Bagni San Nazaro in Genoa.
In Balance With Nature: Biodiversity Pilot Projects
Pilot 1: 2025 WRU19CHs in Trakai, LTU.
The pilot project marks a significant step in integrating biodiversity awareness and action into our events. Designed to assess, protect, restore, and regenerate biodiversity, this initiative is part of a broader collaboration between bloomUp and World Rowing under the World Rowing – WWF Healthy Waters Alliance.

World Rowing Water Quality Testing Guidelines
The World Rowing Water Quality Testing Guidelines are intended to protect the health and safety of rowers at World Rowing competition venues but also have in mind the long-term development of safe and healthy environments for sport and recreation.
World Rowing Sustainability Events Checklist
The checklist, shared with event hosts during bidding, is a practical guide to help Organising Committees build and deliver sustainable events. It covers every stage—from planning to post-event—and key areas like communication, transportation, waste, and water management.
All World Rowing Event Organising Committees are encouraged from the bidding stage to follow sustainability best practices—using the World Rowing Sustainability Events Checklist—to plan their sustainable events and any additional projects that protect & restore nature, cut carbon emissions, and engage local communities.

Brazil Rowing Federation
- Environmental Education & Awareness at their 2025 National Beach Sprint Championship. Read more here.
British Rowing
- Created a Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
- Joined the Clean Water Sports Alliance to address the issue of water pollution, with a shared vision of creating healthy, nature-rich blue spaces across the UK.
- Launching a Thriving Waters Scheme to support affiliated clubs in keeping their local waters thriving through water testing, litter clean-ups, and invasive species management, offering tailored support, funding, and expert advice.
- Partnered with local charity organisations: The Rivers Trust, River Action and Eco-cleaning product manufactures Delphis Eco to address the pollution in their local rivers and establish healthy waters for their rowers to row.
- Provided educational resources and guides to their clubs & rowers to learn more about water quality, invasive plant species and reducing or decarbonising energy usage.
- Created a survey for their clubs to submit sustainability projects and showcase them as a case study.
- Involving their athletes to share their perspective on protecting their healthy waters and allow them the platform to inspire others to take action.
French Rowing Federation
Water Wardens by Rowing (WWbR)
WWbR a project by the FFA (Fédération Française d’Aviron) in cooperation with World Rowing and co-financed by the European Union (EU) aims to create a global movement in France around the urgency of using water efficiently and to protect it. It was officially launched during the 2023 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Paris, France.
Impact:
1.Activation at the 2023 WRU19CHs and 2023 ERBSCHs, with the support from the OCs
- Water Protection Conferences
- Sustainable food and plastic pollution exhibitions
- Deployment of green brigades (volunteers dedicated to water protection, waste management)
- Activation booths with WWbR Project’s Educational Kit (Kit Avinature)
- Live in-person interactive theatres to exchange with spectators and communities about water pollution and water protection.
KPIs: 1500 spectators/day, 450 athletes, 200 volunteers
2. Creation of WWbR Mobile application
- For the rowing community to upload data on water issues that restrict the use of the waterways for rowing.
- The data collected will enable scientists to have valuable input to tackle the issues.
KPIs: 246 uploads, 145 clubs engaged, 98 hrs of restricted practice
3. Creation of pedagogical resources and educational scheme of work
- Exhibitions, Kit Avi Nature, train-the-trainers
KPIs:25 School kits, 42 Trainers educated, 74 project uploads
4. Final Conference
- Topics connected to water protection, event certification, sustainable food and OC role on sustainability awareness.
